Now I should have known this would happen, since his mom has told stories of many Halloween's where Jake has cut his hand or finger carving pumpkins. I was upstairs when it all happened and heard the door slam with a grunt from Jake and then a, "shoot!" I hurried downstairs wondering what went wrong and I was welcomed in the kitchen by a trail of blood. Jake was running his hand under the sink and blood just trailed freely. Normally I can't stand nasty cuts and things but my protective wife mode helped me in a moment of crisis. I looked in his finger and it was very deep, almost to the bone, I got out all my supplies from our emergency kit crazy fast like I was preparing for surgery, bandaged it three times, added wads of gauze, and the only tape I had was blue painters tape, which I wrapped around everything multiple times. Luckily, we have a great doctor friend in our ward and he was kind enough to meet Jake at his office on a Saturday night to stitch him up, 5 stitches total! Jake waited all day holding his finger until the doctor was available, even after several hours it was still bleeding. The cut is very jagged as you can see so stitching was a little tricky. If you have never seen a hedge trimmer it looks like a little chain saw! Our hedge trimmer is an old thing and obviously not safe. We feel so lucky that it didn't take off Jake's whole finger, I would have had to be the one to go searching in the bushes for the lost finger tip! Ew! Jake was very strong, said it only felt like a paper cut, uh huh ... right! I love my Jake and I have loved being his nurse daily as I clean it up and bandage it, poor guy.

The story of Jake's finger
While Jake was trimming our hedges in our front yard last Saturday, the hedge trimmer got a little excited and started trimming Jake's finger too.....
